The modern dance pioneer Gertrud Bodenwieser arrived in Australia in 1939 as an exile from her homeland, Austria. She had a passion to expose Australians to the modern expressive dance forms of Europe. Her Australian company undertook extensive regional tours across the country. The company also visited New Zealand, South Africa and India.
