Coastal profiles, or drawings of coastlines from the ship, were an essential supplement to, and aid in, the construction of a nautical chart. They enhanced the definition of particularly difficult coastlines, providing a pictorial, almost three-dimensional interpretation of the shape of the coast. Reference to the profiles allowed for the easy identification of particular landmarks recognisable from the sea, assisting interpretation of charts, and the correction of navigation errors.
