Half and Half: A look at Nora Heysen's technique

Use the following artists as stimulus material: Monet, Seurat, Manet , Degas, and any other artists who used brushstrokes of pure colour and minimal use of sombre shades.

Show students examples of the artists' work that use pure colour.

Brainstorm with students their colour theories, looking at colours used and the way shadows can be created without using black or brown.

From the website, show students the following Heysen works:

  • Corn Cobs 1938
  • Freesias 1985
  • Peaches 1989

Select any others that show the use of pure colour.

Print colour copies of Heysen’s flower paintings, one print between two students.

Cut each print in half.

Stick half print on a sheet of drawing paper.

Ask students to reproduce the other half of the print using brushstrokes of pure colour.
