From the Novus Atlas by Willem Blaeu, this map extends from India to Japan, and it is one of the first printed maps to show some of the pre-Tasman, Dutch discoveries in Australia up to 1628. This was an early attempt to cater to the popular market, and was published in many editions and many languages. Born Willem Jansson, Willem Blaeu changed his name to avoid confusion with the Jansson family of mapmakers. His brother Joan was appointed official VOC (Dutch East India Company) cartographer in 1638.
