As the ships of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) came into contact with the new continent, official cartographer Hessel Gerritsz compiled detailed representations of the discoveries.
This large scale map covers the extent of Dutch contact during 1616–1623, from Cape Leeuwin to Tryal Rocks and Exmouth Gulf. Close inspection reveals a delicate line indicating the coast. On this chart north is on the left.
