Nieuw-Holland, Waijer and Vosschenbosch
(Maarten
van Delft)
After English captain William Dampier, aboard HMS Roebuck, had explored the north-west coast of Australia in 1699 , the Dutch became worried about further English advances into a region they had come to consider their own. In 1704, the VOC (Dutch East India Company) ships Nieuw-Holland, Waijer and Vosschenbosch were sent to prevent further incursions. The ships, under the command of Maarten Van Delft, charted the northern coasts of Bathurst and Melville islands, and Coburg Peninsula.
