Frederick
Millward Grey (1899-1957)
Frederick
Millward Grey was a painter, printmaker and art teacher. Born in
London, he studied at the London Central School of Art, and was
a student at the Royal Academy School and the Slade School from
1919 to 1923. His studies were interrupted by the First World War,
in which he served as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force.
After
the war Grey returned to his studies at the Royal Academy School
under John Adamson, and also studied commercial art under Noel Rooke.
He was appointed teacher of painting, drawing and commercial art
at the School of Fine Arts, South Australia, in 1923 and later became
its director.
Principal
of the South Australian School of Art from 1946 to 1956, Grey was
also a member of the Australian Painters and Etchers' Society, American
Bookplate Society and the Designers and Collectors Society, Washington.
