Tom
Purvis (1888-1959)
Born
in Bristol, England, Tom Purvis attended the Camberwell School of
Arts and Crafts while working in his father's art studio. He then
went into advertising, finding employment with Mother and Crowther's
Advertising Agency and the Avenue Press printing firm. While working
as a freelance designer in the 1930s he published the magazine Poster
Progress. By the late 1930s he was described as the 'biggest name
in British commercial design'.
The
Australian National Travel Association commissioned Purvis to design
posters for London billboards to advertise the celebrations associated
with Australia's 150th Anniversary.
