The Library would like your views on the services offered in the seven reading rooms around the building. Three focus groups held in November 2007 were an excellent start, but we want the discussion to continue. The focus group participants were asked:
•	What makes the National Library special
•	What they value about the reading rooms
•	What ‘zones’ for different activities they’d like to see – for example for group work, quiet study, multimedia, family history, etc.
•	Whether they’d like to see a special collections ‘zone’ to access a variety of materials (manuscripts, oral histories, music, pictures, etc) simultaneously

You can read the focus group report. The Library invites you to share ideas about our reading rooms on our blog or by sending an email to comments@nla.gov.au. Keep the ideas coming!

Rare and beautiful botanical pictures and books, many on show for the first time, are among the highlights of a display about Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, which recently opened at the National Library.

The System of Nature: Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Linnaeus, arguably the most influential natural scientist of the 18th century. Linnaeus established systems of biological classification that are still followed today.

Linnaeus had close links with Australia through both Joseph Banks, a key supporter of his ideas, and Linnaean ‘apostle’ Daniel Solander. Both men were on board the Endeavour (1768–1771) on what was probably the first modern plant-collecting expedition.

Among the magnificent watercolours, portraits, prints and manuscripts are rare images of Australian plants from the National Library’s Pictures Collection, including an engraving of a waratah from 1793 and watercolours of banksias from the 1840s.

Also on show are two rare books written by Linnaeus, dated 1739 and 1749. These books, held in the Library’s collection, have never been on public display before.

A website
has been created to accompany the exhibition.
