The project is seeking ARC support in the specific technological areas of the project for equipment and production costs associated with digitisation. It is in these areas, where the particular needs of tooling of the infrastructure for new facilities and equipment, and for the development of new skills, that ARC funding is appropriate.
To assist with the project we are also seeking funds for 3.2 research support staff.
All overhead costs and all management costs, and as far as possible all costs for "established" functions (microfilming, selection etc) are absorbed by the participants, though because of the importance of protecting the original materials some support is required here (estimated at .75 of a staff member).
While the project will provide opportunities for some cost-recovery in areas such as CD-ROM production, print reproduction, negotiation regarding commercial rights, other value-added products, and possible network user-pays arrangements, direct income from the products of the project is not envisaged as significant: ie less than $A10,000 over 2-3 years after the project.
Income from the project will go toward maintenance and refreshing of the digital material.
Any income from the project will, through the Project Management Committee, be distributed to ensure that maintenance costs are covered. In the very unlikely event of any surplus income (above maintenance) from the project, the Project Management Committee will consider courses of action within funding regulations and costs and contribution of participants.
Assumptions: This budget is prepared on the assumptions that this project is for c.1,100 volumes, containing c. 150,000 pages. It is assumed that all or some of the following process stages occur: selection of items, conservation preparation of items, preservation microfilming to Australian and international standards, preservation digitisation of microfilm to .TIFF image files, conversion of selected items to ASCII text, design and implementation of document control structure and interface, design and provision of network delivery system, documentation and training, and preservation storage of microfilm masters and master digital data files.
