Selected excerpt from this collection
Lance Ah Chin describes the game of 'Leapo':
Lance Ah Chin: 'You'd have a circle like this, see, usually underneath a light pole, you know. You'd pick two teams - it's something like Red Rover. You'd pick two teams - and they've got to go out - and one team got to go out - and like and there's a boundary you know - you've got a boundary - and they try to hide and everything like that - and this other team go out and seek out and find them - and you've got to have one person at home - or two people at home - waiting - because if they run through that circle, you know, if the opposite team run through that circle or even on the side of it without getting touched - all the rest go free, see, and the game carried on again.'
Chris Sullivan: 'The next mob they go in the middle there?'
Lance Ah Chin: 'Yes. So you have someone there guarding it, so they usually have three or four guarding it - but usually you sneak through - you know you creep up on the light pole - the light facing that way and the light pole there and you get a dark shadow - that's where we used to sneak up along the side of the dark shadow - they couldn't see us see because it was black.'
Chris Sullivan: 'So you always played at night?'
Lance Ah Chin: 'At night.'
