Michael LeunigMichael Leunig: A Celebration

Michael Leunig grew up in a working-class suburb in Melbourne.

Feeling that he had been ill-prepared for intellectual life, Leunig left university to follow in his father’s footsteps as a slaughterman.

His flirtation with cartooning in this period landed him a job with the short-lived afternoon newspaper Newsday. During the 1970s, he gained recognition in Nation Review. He has since become one of Australia’s favourite cartoonists, regularly contributing his poignant insights on life to the Melbourne Age and the Sydney Morning Herald. He has published a number of books of collected cartoons, and his works have been featured on everything from city and gallery walls to trams, buses and cafés.
