The Battle of Gully Ravine
The Battle of Gully Ravine at Helles began on 28 June 1915. British and Indian troops were despatched in an effort to fortify a moderate advance made there a week earlier by French troops and with the ongoing hope of seizing Achi Baba. Ammunition and artillery were once again in short supply, but the troops initially made progress, successfully taking Turkish coastal trenches. A strong Turkish counter-attack in the first week of July failed to remove the allies from their coastal positions but prevented them gaining higher ground. Allied casualties amounted to 3800 and Turkish casualties were estimated to be some 14 000.
