Browse by Publication

“Browse by Publication” presents a list of the types of publications covered in GovPubs. Selecting from the list presents a page which displays:

  • What are [Publications of selected type]?: Select this link to display a definition of that type of publication
  • A list of jurisdictions (i.e. Commonwealth, states or territories), which are links to further down the page
  • The publication type - jurisdiction (e.g. Bills - Victoria), followed by a list of titles with the dates they cover, arranged by Current Series, Previous Series, Further Reading and Index. The publication type - jurisdiction heading links to a page with a history of the publication type in that jurisdiction and more details of all the titles listed. Each title links to a page with more details about that particular title.

Browse by State

“Browse by State” presents a list of jurisdictions (i.e. Commonwealth, state or territory). Selecting from the list presents a page which displays:

  • A list of publication types (e.g. Acts/Ordinances/Statutes, Parliamentary Papers, etc.) which are links to further down the page
  • The jurisdiction - publication type (e.g. Gazettes - Queensland), followed by a list of titles with the dates they cover, arranged by Current Series, Previous Series, Further Reading and Index. The jurisdiction - publication type heading links to a page with a history of the publication type in that jurisdiction and more details of all the titles listed. Each title links to a page with more details about that particular title.

Browse by Library

“Browse by Library” presents a list of the National, State and Territory libraries. Select a library from the list to display brief information about government publications at the library, including links to the library's website and/or catalogues. You can then select the publication type (e.g. Acts/Ordinances/Statutes, Parliamentary Papers, etc.) and the jurisdiction (i.e. Commonwealth, state or territory) you are interested in.

A list of titles is displayed which link to details further down the page. The details may include:

  • the call number (you may need to note this down if you are going to consult the publication at the library or request a copy through their document delivery or interlibrary loan services) and/or the Amicus number (needed for the National Library of Australia's eCallSlips service)
  • the dates held at this call number or location
  • the format e.g. paper, microform
  • notes about access to the publication
  • general notes about the publication

Browse Web publications

From the drop down menus select the publication type (e.g. Acts/Ordinances/Statutes, Parliamentary Papers, etc.) and the jurisdiction (i.e. Commonwealth, state or territory) you are interested in and click Find. A list of titles is displayed which link to details further down the page. The details may include:

  • the dates available on the Web
  • the format, i.e. online
  • notes about access to the publication
  • the URL, which links to the publication itself
  • general notes about the publication

Search

There are two ways of searching: using the menus or doing a keyword search. The menus are a guide as to what is in the GovPubs database. Use the menus if you are not sure what to search on or if you want to find a particular publication type in a particular jurisdiction (state, territory or Commonwealth). Use the keyword search if the menus are not specific enough or if you want to search for a particular word or words.

Searching with the menus

Select a publication type e.g. Acts/Ordinances/Statutes, Parliamentary Papers, etc., select a jurisdiction i.e. Commonwealth, state or territory, and click on Find.

The resulting page displays a history of the publication type in that jurisdiction and the titles of the publications themselves. The titles link to more details about the publications further down the page.

Keyword search

Use the "Search GovPubs for" box to enter a keyword search. If you enter two words e.g. 'legislative council', only entries containing both words will be retrieved. Case does not matter unless you enter a word all in upper case, e.g. 'ACT' only finds 'ACT' not 'act'.

The search results may contain publications (i.e. publication types, for instance, What are Bills? or Bills - Tasmania), and/or resources (i.e. titles of publications, for instance, Legislative Council Sessional Orders) and/or locations (e.g. Web publications or NLA). Select the underlined links to see more details of the results containing the word/s you searched for. The text which is not underlined provides context to the links. For example:

Standing Orders - Tasmania. Current Series - Standing orders of the Legislative Council.

The search retrieved the title 'Standing orders of the Legislative Council'. The non-underlined text tells you that this title is a current series of Tasmanian Standing Orders.

Locating a publication

Once you have found the details of a publication, whether by using Browse by Publication, Browse by State, or Search, a set of links is displayed under 'Locate a copy of this publication'.

'Web publications' indicates the publication is available on the Web and selecting this link will provide more details including the dates covered and the URL, which is a link to the publication itself.

If one of ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC, WA is displayed, the publication is physically located in the relevant State Library or Territory Library. NLA is the National Library of Australia. (For general information about the libraries use Browse by Library.) Selecting these links displays details which may include:

  • the call number (you may need to note this down if you are going to consult the publication at the library or request a copy through their document delivery or interlibrary loan services) and/or the Amicus number (needed for the National Library of Australia's eCallSlips service)
  • the dates held at this call number or location
  • the format e.g. paper, microform
  • notes about access to the publication
  • general notes about the publication
