Japan study grants
The Japan Study Grants Advisory Committee met in November 2009 and approved five grants. The Japan Study Grants fund travel and living costs in Canberra for four weeks to use the National Library's Japanese collections. The successful applicants will take up their grants between November 2009 and April 2010. They are:
Dr Masako Gavin, Brisbane, studying 'The Life and thoughts of Ienaga Toyokichi: Bridging over the Pacific'
Ms Akiko Tomatsuri, Sydney, with 'A study of Western influence on Japan: the reception of ancient Greek drama in post-war Japan'
Mr Heinz-Erik Ropers, Melbourne, studying 'Contested histories and memories of wartime sexual slavery and forced labour'
Dr Amy Reigle (Ainsworth) Newland, Adelaide studying 'Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) – Artistic Innovator, Traditionalist, or Artist of his Times'
Dr Thomas Wilkins and Dr Minako Ichikawa-Smart, Sydney with the topic 'Securing Japan-Australia relations'
Applications for 2010/2011 will open 1 July 2010 and closeed on 30 September 2010. No late applications will be considered. Application results will be notified by mid November 2010. Successful applicants can take up grants during late November 2010 to September 2011.
