Tahiti
Tahiti was independent until it was annexed by the French during the 19th century as part of French Polynesia.

Taiwan
After military defeat in 1895, China ceded Taiwan to Japan. After World War II, Taiwan reverted to Chinese control. Following Communist victory on the mainland of China in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established the Republic of China.

Tanganyika
Tanganyika was administered as an United Nations trusteeship territory until 9 December 1961, when it became an independent member state of the Commonwealth. Tanganyika adopted a republican form of government on 9 December 1962 and joined Zanzibar and Pemba to be renamed Tanzania in 1964. Tanzania
On 26 April 1964 Tanganyika, Zanzibar and Pemba combined to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar (named Tanzania on 29 October).

Thailand
Thailand was known as Siam until 1939. It has been operated as a constitutional monarchy since 1932.

Transjordan
In 1920 Palestine and Transjordan were formally placed under British administration by a League of Nations mandate. On 22 March 1946 Britain recognised Transjordan as a sovereign independent state. In June 1946 the name was changed to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad was ceded to Great Britain in 1802 and together with Tobago became a crown colony in 1889. On 31 August 1962 Trinidad and Tobago became an independent member state of the British Commonwealth. A republican constitution was adopted in 1976.

Trucial States
In 1820 the rulers of the Trucial Coast sheikhdoms and the British government signed the first of the peace treaties. On 2 December 1971 the states: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain and Ras al-Khaimah (joined by al-Fujairah in 1972) formed the United Arab Emirates.

Turks and Caicos Islands
The British Crown secured the islands in 1766. After an association at various times with the colonies of the Bahamas and Jamaica the Turks and Caicos Islands became a separate colony in 1973. A ministerial form of government was introduced in 1976.
