Zimbabwe

Southern Rhodesia became a British colony in 1923. In 1953 the colony was merged with two British protectorates, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. This union, also known as the Central African Federation, was dissolved in December 1963. (For publications issued by the Federation see Rhodesia and Nyasaland.) Southern Rhodesia became known as Rhodesia until June 1979. Between that time and 11 December of the same year the country was known as Zimbabwe Rhodesia, before reverting briefly to the status of a British colony with the name Southern Rhodesia. The new State of Zimbabwe became legally independent on
18 April 1980.
