National
Library of Australia card catalogue and online catalogue system
|
In
1999 the Library produced its first electronic publication, the widely
acclaimed CD-ROM Endeavour: Captain Cook’s Journal 1768–1771,
introducing yet another medium for the dissemination of stories from the
National Library’s Collection. Electronic publications and exhibitions,
experimenting with and incorporating new technologies, continue to be
produced for the World Wide Web, interpreting the Library’s Collection
and making it available in remote areas.
Keeping
in mind the broad range of important functions and services the National
Library has offered and continues to provide, the future directions of
the Library are many and varied. One very important challenge is that
of technological innovation:
to
capitalise on the opportunities offered in this new environment to ensure
that the National Library continues to serve the nation and provide access
to the information resources of the world.
Directions
for 2000–2002, National Library of Australia
Some
of the different ways the Library plans to continue its brilliant record
of information and collection access and service across Australia will
be through the integration of the services now available. Through the
National Library’s web site, an online visitor will, in the not too distant
future, be able to search for a subject across a range of online services
and view a related digitised image or manuscript, order a service or view
and learn from an online exhibition.
