How can I access full-text newspapers online?

A range of historic Australian newspapers dating from 1803 to 1954 can be freely accessed online via the Library’s Australian Newspapers service. The service allows access to newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program (ANDP). The Australian Newspapers service has been incorporated into Trove, the Library's free online discovery service.

To celebrate the centenary of the Nation's capital, The Canberra Times 1926-1995 has been digitised and is freely available online via the Australian Newspapers service on Trove.

The Factiva database provides full-text coverage of Australian and overseas newspapers from approximately the late 1980s to the present. Coverage of individual publications varies. Factiva is a licenced resource available offsite to Australian residents who are registered as readers.

Library PressDisplay provides access to over 1000 newspapers in 40 languages from more than 80 countries. Coverage is for the last 12 months only. PressDisplay is a licenced resource.

The Sydney Morning Herald Archives 1955-1995 provides full-text coverage to every edition of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald between January 1st, 1955 and February 2nd, 1995. The Archives is a licenced resource.

The Gale NewsVault allows cross-searching of the Gale range of historical newspaper collections. Users can simultaneously search across the Times Digital Archive, the Sunday Times Digital Archive, the 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection, the Financial Times Historical Archive, the 19th Century British Newspapers (parts I-IV), the 19th Century UK Periodicals, the Illustrated London News Historical Archive, the Economist Historical Archive and Punch Historical Archive. NewsVault is a licenced resource.

The Fairfax online archive News Store is now freely available online. Coverage goes back to approximately 1986. Some Fairfax titles are not available via the archive including the Australian Financial Review, BRW and BOSS.

Google News includes content from a number of sources, including both partner content digitized by Google through their News Archive Partner Program and online archival materials that they've crawled. Search results can include content that is freely accessible as well as content that requires a fee.
