The Library holds Indian immigration passes, 1879-1919 on microfilm. They can be accessed through the Newspapers and Microforms Reading Room.
The passes contain the migrant’s depot number, gender, name, caste, father’s name, age, district of origin, registration, and certification of authorities in India about mental and physical fitness etc. The passes are organised by ship of departure in chronological order. No personal name indexes are available.
If you are unable to visit the Library, the microfilms may be borrowed on Inter Library Loan via your local library. Up to ten reels for ten weeks may be requested. You may need to supply a time range in order for the appropriate film/s to be sent.
Alternatively, you might like to employ a private researcher to find a specific name entry for you. A list of private researchers is available from the Library's website.
