Subject suggester tool

Overview

As a way to improve cataloguing efficiency the Collections Management Division of the Library embarked on a project in April 2007 to develop an in-house subject suggester tool. This is an online tool to help cataloguers assign subject headings and classification numbers to library materials, by drawing together information from different sources. These include Library of Congress authority file and Libraries Australia authority files, bibliographic information from the Australian National Bibliographic Database, as well as classification numbers.

The project is currently at a feasibility study stage. A search database is being built with subject headings data and classification data. We are grateful to the Library of Congress and OCLC for their support in providing data for testing. More information will be added to this page as the project proceeds. Please also see the paper presented by Wan Wong and Alison Dellit on the project at the 2007 Australian Committee on Cataloguing Seminar, held in Brisbane, 7 September 2007.
