Digitisation

The National Library of Australia has been involved in digitising significant Australian material since 1996 when its Images1 service was launched. Images1 has now been replaced by the Library's Pictures Catalogue which adopts a 'hybrid library' approach by providing access through a single interface to digitised collection items and to material not yet digitised with a fee-based 'digitisation-on-demand' option.

In 2001 the Library embarked on a major digitisation project - Digitisation of Traditional Format Library Materials - to provide greater access to material in other formats - manuscripts, maps, music and printed collections as well as pictures.

As two of the deliverables of the Library's Digital Services Project, a Digital Collections Manager has been developed in-house to support the products of the digitisation project and a Generic Delivery System to support web access to the Library's Digital Collections.

These are accessible not only through the Library's own Catalogue, Pictures Catalogue and Online Exhibitions but also through federated resource discovery services such as Kinetica, PictureAustralia, AustraliaDancing and MusicAustralia. In addition, URL lists of digital collection items are exposed to Internet search engines.

The Library's digitisation activities are informed by the following policy and planning documents:

The Library hosts the DIGIPRAC-L email discussion list to enable other people involved in digitising traditional format materials to discuss practical day-to-day matters and seek advice.

Through the Australian Libraries Gateway the Library also maintains a list of Australian Digitisation Projects.
