Setting the Priorities and Work Program
Background paper for the first meeting of the National Resource Sharing Working Group held 14 May 1999
Purpose and Outcome
The purpose of this item is to discuss and agree on a work program which will address the priorities of the working group for the next 8-12 months.
The work program should identify what the working group intends to achieve and the processes to be used. It should also set out areas of responsibility and timeframes. Areas where the group wishes to seek external support, eg. project funding, should also be identified.
Background
The proposal for the working group sets out terms of reference and a broad timetable for the working group and suggests areas to be addressed in the period to December 1999. Other issues and priorities which have been raised in discussion earlier on the agenda should also be considered here.
Four priority areas suggested in the terms of reference are:
- Performance standards drafted - drafting of performance standards aimed at improving the efficiency, reliability and client satisfaction of interlibrary loan operations in Australian libraries
- Survey of document delivery practices and trends - developing and conducting a wide-ranging survey of current practices and trends in interlibrary lending
- Plan for consultation developed - consultation with the Australian library community (interlibrary lending practitioners and library managers) and user groups to reach consensus on the standards and promote wide-ranging support for the work and outcomes of the working group
- International interlending issues investigated - this is intended to ensure both Australian input to international standards developments, for example to ILL Protocol Implementers Group (IPIG), and improved processes for international interlibrary lending to benefit Australian users
For discussion and decision, based on these and other issues or priorities which have been raised.
