Presentation by Mary E. Jackson
Held 22 October 1999, 12.15 - 2.00pm
Mary E. Jackson, Senior Program Officer for Access Services, Association of Research Libraries, Washington, DC, USA
Mary E. Jackson recently presented a seminar at the National Library of Australia in Canberra. A copy of the powerpoint slides which accompanied Mary's presentation can be downloaded here in PowerPoint format.
Mary is the Senior Program Officer for Access Services for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in Washington, DC. In that position she directs the North American Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (NAILDD) Project and chairs the NAILDD Project's ILL Protocol Implementors Group (IPIG). Mary was the Principal Investigator of the ARL Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Performance Measures Study, a two-year investigation of the performance of ILL operations in 119 North American research and college libraries.
The ARL ILL/DD Performance Measures Study provided baseline data on unit costs, fill rates, turnaround time, and user satisfaction to enable librarians to identify and understand local performance of ILL/DD operations and to compare their performance to other participants. The study identified the characteristics of low-cost, high-performing operations which provide a basis for libraries to improve their own operations.
Mary's presentation summarised the key findings of the ARL Study, particularly best practices in ILL/DD and the characteristics of high-performing organisations. Issues such as performance standards, charging and use of technology were discussed, as well as the work of the ILL Protocol Implementors Group (IPIG).
Mary is an internationally recognized authority on interlibrary loan, document delivery, resource sharing, and copyright issues. She has written extensively on these topics, is regularly called upon as a consultant to libraries, consortia, and networks, and had given presentations and workshops in the U.S., Canada, and over 10 other countries. She is a member of the IFLA Standing Committee on Document Delivery and Interlending, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Interlending and Document Supply.
