Technical Considerations of the ASGF

Technologies, Specifications & Standards

ASGF members aim to develop a common approach to deploying technologies, specifications and standards where it is practicable to do so. The motivation for doing so is to achieve a persistent, sustainable and interoperable infrastructure. Details of each Gateway's approach is summarised below under the following topics: software, metadata, interoperability, thesauri, quality assurance, usage statistics, partners, milestones and contact details.

Quality assurance usability studies: Have undertaken small usability studies internally. Introduced a 2 minute online survey which is regularly used by subscribers (have had about 100 returns).
  data verification: AustLit's authorities of names, titles, place names, publishers etc, are used while entering data to limit errors; content manager surveys work done by team for accuracy; team members review each others work (peer review).

  reports: The information can be made available upon request. Usage statistics available from password protected site for subscribers.

EdNA Online http://www.edna.edu.au/

Software search engine: Verity is used to build indexes and undertake searching. New search functionality is currently being developed which enables distributed searching of multiple repositories and creation of dynamic categories using thesaurus terms.
  metadata creation tool: a custom-built web interface for metadata is used which includes all the EdNA Metadata Standard. It generates a metadata record file that can be viewed when the resource is discovered. The EdNA Higher Education Project also funded the EdNA Metadata Toolset in 2001-2002. The EdNA Online metadata creation process is now under review.
  metadata extraction tool: metadata is exported in XML
  database: Oracle database underpins the category structures.
  push functionality: RSS feeds for headlines, XML APIs for search, browse, new items added to the database. This functionality is also available for inclusion on other sites.
