Expert Advisory Group on Access to Electronic Resources

The National Library is planning to use Kinetica's resource sharing services to improve access to electronic collections in Australian libraries. The Library appointed an Expert Advisory Group to provide advice on improving the availability of cataloguing and location information for electronic collections, and reducing maintenance costs in local systems and the National Bibliographic Database. The group concluded it's work in July 2001.

Activities

In the spirit of 'learning by doing' the Expert Group is conducting a pilot project to provide access to the Elsevier collection Science Direct. The National Library has purchased a collection of MARC records from OCLC, corresponding to the Science Direct collection. These records have been loaded to the NBD with location and availability information for those Australian libraries which subscribe to the collection.

The Science Direct pilot project will be used to demonstrate how Kinetica can improve national access to electronic resources, and will identify those issues which need special solutions. For example, the question of maintaining the currency and accuracy of the data is of particular concern, as resources are added and deleted from electronic collections over time.

The group is also conducting a survey of major electronic collections in Australian libraries.

Progress reports on the work of the group, including the Science Direct pilot project and the results of the survey, will be provided on the Library's Internet discussion list Kinetica-L. The group's report to the Kinetica Annual User's Meeting in August 2000 contains more information.
