6th CDNLAO Recommendations

There was considerable discussion about the future of CDNLAO, during which it was unanimously agreed that it was important to have an active program of regional activities of mutual interest between meetings.

Resolutions:

  1. That the meeting reaffirm CDNLAO as a useful forum for the discussion of its objectives:

    • to exchange ideas and information and to promote cooperation for the development of libraries in Asia and Oceania;
    • to assist libraries of developing countries through cooperation and mutually beneficial arrangements;
    • to foster a better understanding of the state of the art of library development among libraries in Asia and Oceania;
    • to promote professional enhancements of librarians in Asia and Oceania;
    • to enable CDNLAO as a body to have a common and unified stand on library issues pertaining to Asia and Oceania interests.

  2. That Australia establish a sub-committee comprising the chief executive officers of the national libraries of Australia, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Japan. This sub-committee, the secretariat of which will be at the National Library of Australia, would circulate proposals for interim action on mutually agreed specific issues such as copyright, the information super highway, legal deposit legislation, and national library governing boards.

  3. That the National Library Service of Papua New Guinea investigate the possibility of hosting CDNLAO7 in 1998.
