Update on the National Library of Indonesia

Mr Paul Permadi, Deputy Director

Library Administration

1. Library Organizational Structure

In 1973 these organizations were united but due to the reformation spirit they have now developed into specific organizations - in other words, due to decentralization and autonomy these organizations tend to become federated.

2. New libraries that are being built: not recorded.

3. General trends of visitorship and membership are increasing, especially since the crisis.

4. New features incorporated into libraries: Yes, we have "Masyarakat Pecinta Buku" and "Klub Pecinta Buku Bacaan Anak (KPBBA)".

d. National Data Base
Based on UNIX platform and Micro VTLS software the National Library of Indonesia has Local and Wide Area Network. In the LAN the database could be accessed through the OPAC and manual catalogue. The online searching possibly through the official web site on http://www.pnn.go.id

Infrastructure

Indonesia, through the Minister of Technology and Research, is building the national information technology framework by IPTEKNET (Science and technology information networking) for example. It provides a nation wide information infrastructure and database network based on open system standard.

It is connected to the global Internet using a dedicated satellite line to the United States through FT. INDOSAT since 1993.

Services

A great number of the Indonesian society/communities are in need of library services, especially these who are living in isolated areas. For these communities, it is more important to have circulating libraries (bicycle, car, ship, horse). These libraries needed staff who can touch the feeling of the community so that they will love and have an interest in reading.

The problem is how to disseminate and improve library services to the public. By proclaiming the month of September as "Reading Habit Month" and as "Visit Library Day" we performed various activities such as:
