Infrastructure
Indonesia, through the Minister of Technology and Research, is building the national information technology framework by IPTEKNET (Science and technology information networking) for example. It provides a nation wide information infrastructure and database network based on open system standard.
It is connected to the global Internet using a dedicated satellite line to the United States through FT. INDOSAT since 1993.
Services
A great number of the Indonesian society/communities are in need of library services, especially these who are living in isolated areas. For these communities, it is more important to have circulating libraries (bicycle, car, ship, horse). These libraries needed staff who can touch the feeling of the community so that they will love and have an interest in reading.
The problem is how to disseminate and improve library services to the public. By proclaiming the month of September as "Reading Habit Month" and as "Visit Library Day" we performed various activities such as:
- Contests of reading skills, synopsis, abstracting books, arrangement clipping.
- Exhibition by the Indonesian book association, cheap book bazaar, national library collection: Indonesia.
- Service to the community: to execute book gift; to develop the role of mosque, church and monastery libraries; disabled person, prisoners, hospitalized patients and prostitute.
- Selection best performances for: libraries service usage; all kind of libraries book drops; librarians, "king and queen of books".
- Campaign: to motivate workers to read in libraries, to provide presents of attractive books; meeting with authors, to invite prominent public figures who have reading habit.
