Using the Directory of Z39.50 Targets

Here, you will find help for using the Directory of Z39.50 Targets in Australia.

Please direct comments or questions about the Directory to ALG Administration. For assistance in completing a new entry, email Judith Pearce jpearce@nla.gov.au at the National Library of Australia or telephone her directly on 02 6262 1425.

Finding entries within the Directory

Entries are retrieved using the boxes in the left frame of the screen. Brief information about each of the selected entries is then displayed in the right of the screen. Clicking on the number corresponding to an entry will display the complete details of that entry. You can return to the list by clicking the 'Last browse' box.

To retrieve all the entries from the Directory, leave the National Union Catalogue (NUC) symbol and state/territory boxes blank. By clicking on the 'List sites' button, all entries will be listed. By selecting an option from the 'sort by' selection box, the entries can be listed in order of NUC symbol, site name, state/territory or vendor.

The quickest way to retrieve the entry for a site is to enter its NUC symbol in the box and click on the 'List sites' button. It is advisable to leave the 'state/territory' box blank. Alternatively, you can list all sites ('List sites' button) and sort by NUC-symbol ('sort by' selection box). Then browse the list to find the required entry.

NB* Check NUC symbols within the Australian InterLibrary Resource Sharing (ILRS) Directory online.

To retrieve all sites in the directory that are within a particular state/territory, select from the drop-down box in the left-frame. Ensure the NUC symbol box is blank. By clicking on the 'List Sites' button, all entries for the selected state will be listed. By selecting an option from the 'sort by' selection box, the entries can be listed in order of NUC-symbol, site name, state or vendor.

The entries can be listed in order of NUC symbol, site name, state or vendor by selecting one of these options from the 'sort by' selection box and then clicking the 'List Sites' button.

Adding a new site to the Directory

The entry for the National Library of Australia can be used as an example; retrieve it by entering ANL into the NUC-symbol box in the frame in the left of the screen, and then clicking the 'List Sites' button. If you require further help, please contact ALG Administration.

To add a new site to the Directory:

  1. Click on the 'Add a site' button in the left frame of the screen.

  2. You will be asked to enter the NUC symbol for your site. If your institution does not possess a NUC symbol contact ILRS Administration who will arrange for a NUC symbol to be assigned - this could take a few days.

  3. You will also asked to specify a password. Please make a note of this password so you can make any necessary changes to your entry. If you forget your password or cannot access your entry, please contact ALG Administration.

  4. After entering the NUC symbol and creating a password, click on the 'Login' button to go to the data entry forms.

There are six short sections to the directory: general, target, details, per-database, user fees, other. Please complete each in turn and click on the 'update' button after completing each section. To view your developing entry, click on 'Display Site Profile'. This will enable you to view the information as it will appear in the directory and you can then make changes as you go.

In some places provision is made for the use of preformatted text. The use of preformatted text means the comments you put in the comment boxes will be displayed in exactly this way in the resulting directory entry. This may be useful if you want to leave spaces or align text.

Updating a Directory entry

To update information about your site within the Directory, first, find the entry to be updated. At the top of the screen will be an 'Update Site Info' button. After clicking this button, you will be asked to enter your password and then click the 'Login' button.

You will be taken to the entry forms where you can then make any necessary changes. Remember to click the 'Update' button near the top of each form to ensure any changes are saved.
