State Library of Queenland collection assessment
Chemistry

Division report comments:

Overall collecting level for this division is Level 1a - Minimal with uneven coverage.

With only 671 monographs in this division, this is a very small collection. This represents 0.17% of the 397,000 monographs quoted for State Reference Library and Special Collections in the 1995/96 annual report of the State Library of Queensland.

Much of the publishing output in this division is highly specific or advanced academic material which falls outside State Library's collecting guidelines.

State Library's holdings as compared with the standard bibliographies checked are much higher than the levels of the individual categories suggesting a reasonable general coverage of the area.

Collection strength is in dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks and databooks and general introductory texts.

It is State Library collection development policy not to collect any juvenile literature, school or tertiary textbooks or advanced academic research material.

Holdings in the John Oxley Library have not been considered in this assessment. As Legal Deposit Library, this library collects works relative to and/or published in Queensland in all subject areas.
