13/09/04 - Guidelines for the description of non-book print resources in Visual Arts collections

From discussions with the Visual Arts library community it appears there is a need for guidelines to cover art catalogues, posters/promotion material and material relating to artists and galleries at a collection level. More specifically, this includes art catalogues and collections of catalogues; collections of material relating to individual artists (including programs, invitations, posters, catalogues, press clippings and material which is distributed through events) and special non-book materials such as posters, publicity material relating to collections, artists and galleries, and items in unusual formats.

The guidelines can be found here: http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/manuals/nonbook.html

17/08/04 - 2004 Annual Users Meeting Innovation Award

The Australian Music Centre was awarded the Kinetica Innovation Award at the Kinetica Annual Users Meeting held in Canberra on 13th August. The Innovation Award, in its second year, recognises those who have made an outstanding use of Kinetica for innovation or improvement to library practice or service.

The Australian Music Centre was established in 1974 to facilitate and encourage the performance and understanding of music by Australian composers throughout the world. It has an extraordinarily rich collection, including over 12 000 printed scores and 1800 sets of performance parts of works by Australian composers and 1200 CDs, 3500 tapes, 130 LPs and a small collection of DATs. Much of the collection is unique unpublished material which underpins music performance and research in Australia. Over the past year the Centre has, in partnership with the National Library, used the new OAI standard to harvest the rich records from the Australian Music Centre’s AdLib catalogue and convert the records through MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema) into MARC for inclusion in the National Bibliographic Database and MusicAustralia. This project has demonstrated a very innovative use of new technology to significantly improve access to this very special collection through sharing resource descriptions through two major resource discovery services.

Mr John Arfield, Chair, Kinetica Advisory Committee presented the Award noting: “This project represents a significant step forward in providing access to a unique collection on national significance. The award recognises the important use of innovative technology in improving access to resources in Australia.”

John Davis, General Manager and Judith Foster, Music Resources Manager, Australian Music Centre, accepted the award and commented “The Centre’s Library catalogue will now be available online to Australian libraries through Kinetica for the very first time. The development was a highly cooperative one with significant technical work required, but the benefits in national access are enormous for our largely unique collection.”

Two highly commended applications were also received. The National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) has, through participation in the Commonwealth Metadata Project, successfully developed the harvesting of records for its online publications and inclusion of these records in the National Bibliographic Database. After harvesting these AGLS (a Dublin Core based standard) records are converted through MODS to MARC and then resupplied to the NOHSC for inclusion in their library catalogue to significantly improve resource discovery. The Australian Bureau of Statistics Library was also commended for its work with their Publications Branch to record URLS for links to main features pages for all ABS publications. ABS Library has also worked with Kinetica on the development of record sets of titles in the AusStats collection which can be supplied to Australian libraries to improve their utilisation of this service.

30/07/04 - New Advanced Search interface for the KineticaWeb Update database

In March this year, a new Advanced Search screen was implemented to enable searches on the Search database to be limited to particular material types and/or categories of material by way of checkboxes.

Following strong user support for this enhancement to be extended to the Update database, the redesigned screen has now been implemented to search on the Update database as well.

Online documentation on the new screen interface currently exists, and is accessible at : http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/newsearch.html

Please report any difficulties to me on 02 6262 1683, or contact the Kinetica Help Desk on 1800 0260 155.

20/07/04 - Contributing to the NBD

The National Bibliographic Database is the heart of the Kinetica service, with holdings of the majority of Australian academic, research, state, national, public and special libraries.

More information on contributing to the NBD can be found at: http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/cataloguing.html#NBD

01/07/04 - Accessing Kinetica through EndNote

Creating bibliographies using the vast resources of Kinetica has never been easier. Library users and researchers with access to both Endnote software and Kinetica can now download a connection file to Kinetica from the EndNote web site at http://www.endnote.com/support/enconnections.asp

EndNote is a software tool which facilitates the creation, management and storage of bibliographic references. Researchers who have an EndNote licence can open and search a range of online bibliographic databases and import records in a bibliography-ready format.

The connection file will enable users to open and search Kinetica through EndNote and import records to easily create bibliographies and databases of personal references for use in reports, theses, assignments or any document. National Library staff have liaised with EndNote to establish searching options similar to those provided through KineticaWeb.

If your library provides end-user access to Kinetica, whatever you currently use for authentication will apply and you should notify your clients if a login and password is required. Libraries wishing to take advantage of this facility may need to liaise with their IT sections to set it up.

For problems and queries please contact EndNote directly, the Australian agent is:

21/06/04 - State User Group Presentations

The Powerpoint presentation delivered to State User Groups in mid 2004 can be found here. The presentation gives an overview of the Kinetica Redevelopment Project and highlights other developments in Kinetica, including steps that Kinetica is taking to address Database Quality issues and the Kinetica Annual Users Meeting.

18/06/04 - Database Quality Improvement Plans

Kinetica has an ongoing program of quality improvement tasks in relation to both the National Bibliographic Database (NBD) and the the Chinese Japanese and Korean (CJK) Database. A wide variety of tasks have been prioritised for action and are particularly important in relation to the migration of data to the redeveloped Kinetica system. 11/06/04 - Kinetica Training Survey

The National Library seeks your feedback and advice on training needs for the Kinetica Cataloguing Client, Kinetica Web and Kinetica Document Delivery. Your survey responses will help us provide timely and effective training and training support materials and will be particularly useful in identifying training needs in light of the Kinetica Redevelopment project.

The survey has now finished.

05/05/04 - Kinetica Cataloguing Workflows Workshops

Kinetica have scheduled a program of Cataloguing Workflows Workshops in all states and territories to be conducted over May-August 2004. The workshops will be a forum for Cataloguing managers and practitioners to actively engage in discussion about the various factors involved in establishing and maintaining efficient cataloguing workflows, and to share with others in the group the benefits of their expertise and experience.

Further details can be viewed on the events page.

21/04/04 - Changes to Kinetica Charges 2004/2005

The National Library of Australia will be increasing charges for some Kinetica services from 1 July 2004. The National Library has considered this decision very carefully. This issue was discussed with the Kinetica Advisory Committee in March 2004, and the Committee endorsed selected price increases, noting that Kinetica has worked very hard to reduce operating expenses as far as possible.

Further details can be viewed on the Kinetica charges page.

03/04/04 - Enhancements to KineticaWeb Advanced Search interface to include new search categories

Over the last few months a new KineticaWeb Advanced Search interface has been developed to improve the functionality of the KineticaWeb Advanced Search Screen. The redesigned screen is now ready for implementation, and Kinetica customers will be able to preview it on the 4th of March 2004.

The new screen will provide a much simpler way of limiting searches to particular material types and/or categories or material. Users will be able to limit searches to the following groups of records on the National Bibliographic Database :

You will be able to access the new screen on Thursday 4 March by logging in to the Kinetica Search Service. We would welcome your feedback on the new functionality, and an online form has been developed for you to add your comments. Please remember to clear your web caches before logging on.

The KineticaWeb manual will be updated to include the changes. Meanwhile, some short documentation on the new Advanced Search interface has been prepared, and is available online at http://www/librariesaustralia/manuals.html#laman

Please report any difficulties to Adrienne Yeo on 02 6262 1683 (ayeo@nla.gov.au), or contact us.
