Libraries Australia Forum 2008

Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, 23 October 2008
Event tag <LAF2008>
The theme of the Forum is ‘futures’, and the topics are:
- The future of catalogues
- The future of library spaces
- New futures for authority data
Confirmed speakers are:
- Eric Lease Morgan. Head of the Digital Access and Information Architecture Department, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA. Eric provides content to the ‘New Generation Catalogs 4 Libraries’ list. http://www.library.nd.edu/daiad/morgan/index.shtml
- Dr Colin Adrian. CEO, Canberra Institute of Technology. ‘The CIT is undergoing a major transformation with plans for some $250 million investment over the next 20 years. As part of this work, the CIT Library will become a learning commons area where students will have 24-hour access to online equipment and new methods of learning delivery.’ As an introduction to this transformation, the CIT examined its brand. Concern about perceptions of its longevity (80 years old), the reputation associated with TAFEs, how to maintain influence, the introduction of new technologies, and fixing a position in a shifting market (for example, from time-rich to time-poor) led to new marketing and positioning strategies.
- Simon Porter. Information manager (research), eScholarship Research Centre, University of Melbourne. Simon works on the Australian Find-An-Expert database, and is exploring collaboration with the National Library’s People Australia project. http://www.caudit.edu.au/educauseaustralasia07/authors_papers/Porter-243.pdf
- Dr Thomas Hickey. Thom co-leads OCLC’s implementation of the Virtual International Authority File project http://viaf.org.
He also researches the exploitation of authority data in WorldCat. http://outgoing.typepad.com/outgoing/2007/02/identities_and_.html
