Cataloguing – update applied to CBS system

We are pleased to announce a patch release of the configuration files was applied to our CBS system on October 16 2010. This patch contained MARC21 changes which included a change to the 440 field.

As you are aware the 440 field has been obsolete since 2008, but we have many legacy records on the ANBD that contain a 440 field.

According to MARC standards there is no requirement to update these records. However, we send records to OCLC via SRU Update and OCLC has a requirement that we not use the 440 field. Therefore, we have implemented a change whereby if there is a 440 field in a record then it is displayed as a 490/830 combination in the MARC Exchange view that is pushed to Libraries Australia Search and via SRU to OCLC. The 440 field is also altered into a 490/830 field during the Record Import Service.

Note: this change has no effect on indexing because both the 440 and 491 fields are indexed in the title, title keyword and series title indexes.
