Survey to identify major electronic collections in Australian libraries

Expert Advisory Group on Access to Electronic Resources

Electronic resource discovery and access are providing a significant challenge for libraries. In order to assist librarians meet this challenge, the National Library of Australia has convened an Expert Advisory Group to work on issues relating to Access to Electronic Resources, and in particular, how to use Kinetica’s resource sharing services to improve access to electronic collections in Australian Libraries.

The Expert Group is considering issues such as

  • Identification of major electronic resources acquired by Australian libraries
  • Availability of cataloguing data corresponding to collections of electronic resources
  • Bibliographic standards for cataloguing of electronic resources
  • Addition and maintenance of bibliographic, location and availability data within the NBD and local systems
  • Developing a national resource sharing service model for improved access to electronic collections
  • A Pilot project to demonstrate how Kinetica might improve access to electronic resources

This survey is primarily aimed at identifying major electronic collections in use in Australian libraries. Identification of key datasets will assist in determining priorities for:

  • improving the availability of cataloguing data for these collections
  • improving the availability of locations information
  • reducing maintenance costs in local systems and the NBD

The survey will build a picture about the electronic collections in Australian libraries, including what collections are held, how they are acquired, and how they are accessed, including availability for interlibrary lending. Answers to the questions below will help the Expert Group focus on those activities that reap the most benefit for libraries attempting to improve access to their electronic collections, and simultaneously contain the problems and costs associated with delivering these collections to users.

Survey results will be available via the National Library’s web site (as aggregated data only). These results will also be shared with the Australian Library Collections Task Force, who are researching access to scientific serials.
