During our site visits to members, we noticed that different users have different search preferences. Some prefer to use simple search most of the time, others always like to begin with an advanced search looking for titles “as a phrase”, or perhaps always titles that “start with”. Some prefer to search a couple of databases up front, others like to begin with one. Although some of these defaults can already be controlled using individual accounts and defaults, there are various issues with these.

We have decided to expand the number of things which can be customised in Libraries Australia. Instead of having to go to a separate form and choose the settings you want, the new Libraries Australia will just remember what you used last. Most things will be remembered as long as you are using the same PC, but some will only be remembered for the session. Here is the list of things which will be remembered when the new system is released:

On the search form:

Which search form is shown by default (simple, advanced, command)

The databases being searched

The checkbox limits selected

For advanced searches, all drop down, radio button and checkbox selections. This includes the fields being searched (title, author, etc); the way they are searched (starts with, phrase, etc); limiting to a state; limiting to recently published items; and everything else.

On the search results:

The sorting applied

The number of results shown

Whether a preview of each result is shown on hover

On the full view screen:

Whether the full view or marc view is displayed

When the Libraries Australia Search alpha is released, if you find that any of these do not work well, let us know about the problem so that we can try to correct it. If you have an opinion you would like to share with us in the mean time, please leave a comment below. We’d love to hear from you.

In the first month since configuring the Libraries Australia system to
support the creation, import, matching and merging of RDA data there are now
approximately 88,000 RDA records in the Australian National Bibliographic
Database.

There are a number of significant contributors of RDA data with the single
biggest contribution coming from the Library of Congress – making up around
80% of the total RDA records contributed.

National agencies such as the National Library of Australia and the British
National Bibliography contribute 11% of the total RDA records contributed.

Over half of all locally produced RDA records are from the National Library
of Australia and a quarter of the locally produced RDA records are being
generated by Australian library vendors.

Libraries Australia members are also contributing a significant number of RDA
records with a number of libraries across the country contributing over 100
records each, in addition to loading over 2,500 RDA records from WorldCat
into the NBD.

Libraries Australia also recognises a number of Australian contributors of
RDA authority data with over 1,000 new RDA authority records now available in
the National Bibliographic Database. We are pleased to note that the NBD
team has upgraded over 23,000 authority records to date, improving data to
make them RDA compliant.

These figures highlight the growing impact of RDA data in Libraries
Australia. We look forward to providing further updates on the growing rate
of RDA data in the NBD over the coming months.

To ensure a smoother requesting process, some simple guidelines to follow are:

As a requester
If requesting a Rush or Express, a quick phone call to the library on the rota will avoid delays.

Before requesting a renewal, check the library’s listing on the ILRS for Standard Conditions of supply. A sample listing is below:

Standard conditions of supply: Please notify by phone or fax that a request has been placed through LADD for RUSH OR EXPRESS and quote LADD number. Loans are for 8 weeks and are non-renewable.

The ILRS search page can be found here: http://www.nla.gov.au/ilrs/
Please keep your ILRS page up to date, if you have forgotten your password, please use the contact form:

http://www.nla.gov.au/ilrs/contact.html

Ensure requests are filled out as completely as possible. A quick Google search might help you find the correct citation.

As a responder
Check LADD regularly for incoming requests or sign up for email alerts http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/services/docdel/email-alerts/

Follow the ILRS Code for supplying requests: Core 4 day, Rush 24 hours, Express 2 hours.
You can find a printable pdf of the Code here:

http://www.alia.org.au/interlibrary.lending/Australian.ILRS.Code.pdf

If you cannot fill the request within the required time it is recommended to action as ‘Answer NonSupply’. The system automatically sends the request to the next location on the rota. If you are able to supply the request, however not immediately, you may use the action ‘Answer Will Supply’ but be aware that this effectively holds the request at your location until you select either ‘Answer Non-Supply’ or ‘Shipped’.

All library suspensions can be found here:
www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/services/docdel/members-suspensions/

If you have any questions, please contact the Libraries Australia Helpdesk on 1800 026 155 or through our online form:

There have been some minor changes in LADD to incorporate the implementation of RDA at the end of March. The issues that LADD wanted to address were:

• Will z3950 searching from LADD be affected by RDA?
• With the GMD (240$h) being made redundant, (being replaced by the Content, Media and Carrier types), will there be enough information in requests for RDA bibliographic records for libraries to determine the physical medium of requested material.

Searching – The only current search parameter of concern was to the publication details area. No changes were necessary as Libraries Australia will be indexing data from the new 264 field (Production, Publication, Distribution, Manufacture, and Copyright Notice) with the data in the 260 (Publication, Distribution, etc. (Imprint).

Bibliographic Search results – Data from the 336 (Content Type), 337 (Media Type) and 338 (Carrier Type) will now be visible in bibliographic search results in LADD.

Item Description - Data from the Physical Medium Fields, ie 336, 337 and 338 fields, will be mapped to the end of the Item description field in the requests form, and request screens for both requester and responder.

Item Description – The item description field will now be visible in both monograph and copy requests.

Stage 2 of the project was completed in December on schedule. The three key deliverables from this stage were:

the new Libraries Australia Search database (MySQL database and SOLR indexes)

new Loader software. This receives records from CBS , the LA cataloguing client database , and loads them into the Search database.

a new Z39.50 interface to the search database, which will be accessed via the existing ZGateway.

Although they have been built now, these won’t be released into production until the end of Stage 4. Testing of the Z39.50 interface by a small number of Libraries Australia member libraries using a range of different Z39.50 clients is planned to occur during March.

Stage 3 of the project is now well underway. The key deliverable will be an alpha version of the Libraries Australia Search service (LA Search Alpha).

The things the project team learnt from the research done during Stage 1 and the usability evaluations of screen mock-ups done in Stage 2, are being incorporated into LA Search Alpha. However we need to ensure the changes we are making are actually going to improve things for you. So the idea is that we get an early, although incomplete, version of the new system out for Libraries Australia users to look at as soon as we can. If there are any issues, we want to know about them during the project so they can be addressed prior to production release.

The functionality of LA Search Alpha will be limited to the simple and advanced search screens, search results and record full view screens plus login/IP authentication.
