CATALOGUING

Issues Response

Will the preference table used for loading and merging records be revised in the new system

The preference table currently used will remain in the new system.

Will the correct punctuation be automatically inserted in the appropriate places when cataloguing on the Client?

Punctuation will be added to the record on export and in the MARC display. Cataloguers will not see punctuation in the Edit screen, nor will they have to enter it.

Can the process of identifying duplicates be simplified, and if so, can information be posted to Kinetica-L

Suggested cutting and pasting Amicus Numbers for duplicates into a Word document, and faxing to the help desk.  Information was posted to kinetica-l on 3 August.

Reporting of duplicate records through the cataloguing client should be available later this year.

Queries re the appropriate date for reproductions in the Guidelines for theses

Will be clarified in the final guidelines

Queries re the use of the MARC 665 for e-books in the  Guidelines for e-books

Will be clarified in the final guidelines

Will the web input form still be available

Yes.  It will be available through Libraries Australia in much the same way as the current web input form is available through KineticaWeb Update.

Will the non MARC tags which are used in the current client disappear in the new client

Yes – the new Client will be MARC 21 compliant.

Can details of a library’s holdings be changed in the Cataloguing client or in Libraries Australia?

Holdings will be able to be amended in both Libraries Australia search and in the Libraries Australia Cataloguing Client

Will users be able to selected different fonts as well as font sizes in the cataloguing client?

Yes.  It will enable users to select the size and font for inputting text.
Non Roman script characters (eg CJK) will be input using the Microsoft Windows Input Method Editor (IME).

Where is the cataloguing workflows manual?

The Cataloguing workflows workshop manual including case studies can be found at http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/workflowoptions.html and may be helpful to any library that is considering how they might best use records from and contribute to the Australian National Bibliographic Database.

Where are the Kinetica cataloguing standards?

The Kinetica cataloguing standards replaced the ABN cataloguing manual and are available on the web at http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/standards.html in PDF and html.

Will the new cataloguing system strip local tags (9XX, X9X, XX9) from records on loading?

Local tags will be stripped in the new cataloguing system, with the exception of local subjects in MARC 69X, which will be converted to MARC 653, and the 091 (which is used for maintenance of collections by Libraries Australia staff). Holdings in 984 will be converted to 850, as is the case now.

When importing a record into the Libraries Australia Cataloguing Client from another database eg RLIN, will libraries be able to cut and paste only parts of the records?

There are filters in the Libraries Australia Cataloguing Client which will remove any fields that aren't used in when the record is imported.  Users can then do further editing of the record in the Client before saving it to the ANBD.

Will it be possible to use our cataloguing clients and automatically save records to the NBD and our catalogues?

The Union catalogue profile has not been implemented yet in the software we are implementing and it has also not been implemented in other systems.  We will continue to monitor developments in this area.

How can I report poor records?

Please contact the Kinetica help desk.

How can I search for NACO & SACO authorities

Any library wishing to search the NACO and SACO authorities can do so by using Libraries Australia to search the RLG authorities, or searching the Library of Congress Authorities database on the web at http://authorities.loc.gov/.

How can I download NACO/SACO authorities?

Information on how to download authority records through Libraries Australia is available in the Libraries Australia manual – PDF and Word versions of the manual are available online at http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/manuals.html#laman

Information on downloading authorities using Z39.50 is available online at http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/redevz3950.html

Is there information that can assist us to use the cataloguing client and meet our IT security requirements?

Information will be made available to help you liaise with your IT staff so that you can use the cataloguing client within your environment.

Will users be able to merge duplicates themselves in the new system

No. If there are duplicate records with no holdings, they can be deleted.

However, duplicates containing holdings should be referred to the help desk, as is the case now.

What will the delay be in updating the search database from the update database

Synchronisation will be near real-time, instead of overnight, as is the case now.

Will the old client cease one day and the new client start the next?

Yes, there will be a cut over to the new client, the date for this will be announced at the Annual User Meeting.

What is happening to CJK control numbers when they are migrated across to the new cataloguing system

Record control numbers in CJK records will be replaced by CBS system numbers.  All superseded CJK immutable numbers (i.e. the ".b" numbers) will be retained within CBS and will be stored/exported in field 099.  The exception is CJK authority record immutable numbers which cannot be output from Innopac and will therefore not be migrated.

How will diacritics be input into the new system? Will it be the same method as Accent Composer?

There is an option in Cataloguing Client to view special characters.  Script characters can be entered via the user’s Windows Input Method Editor (IME) as the CJK people are doing now.

KINETICA RE-DEVELOPMENT - TRAINING

Issues Response

Trainers will need the new client software for loading to PC’s for user training.

The cataloguing client will be available via ftp. If CD's are required by trainers this will need to be organised by the trainers.

When will the cataloguing client training be held?

Training for the new Libraries Australia Cataloguing Client will commence in September.  Training will occur in all states.  The schedule of training available at http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/training/schedule.html will shortly include cataloguing client courses.  Any questions about training should be sent to Kylie Moloney, email kmoloney@nla.gov.au, or phone 02 6262 1326

Can training be organised in Rockhampton?

Providing sufficient interest a training course will be organised.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

Issues Response

Will Viclink libraries that start to contribute holdings get a reduction from Viclink in their subscriptions to reflect the fact that they will be contributing.

Consortial subscriptions to Libraries Australia/Kinetica  should be discussed with Consortium coordinators.

With the new subscription model if libraries increase their use of Libraries Australia/Kinetica will there be an increase in their charge?

The new model enables libraries to benefit from their subscription, if you significantly increase your usage there will not be an increase in your subscription level.

Do I have to pay an additional charge to batch load records to the ANBD?

The new subscription covers use of all services, except for searching RLG and OCLC databases.  There are no additional charges to use batch link

KINETICA DOCUMENT DELIVERY / LIBRARIES AUSTRALIA
