Introduction

The ABN cataloguing manual has been produced for the use of ABN cataloguers inputting and changing records on the database.

ABN cataloguers should always be mindful that they are cataloguing in a network. Cataloguers may add new data to records or change incorrect data, but it is not acceptable to delete valid cataloguing data from the ABN database.

The standards used for descriptive cataloguing on ABN consist of the following:

This manual contains variations from AACR2R and LC rule interpretations that were passed by the ABN Standards Committee and adopted on ABN, as well as ABN standards for the input and change of records, and guidelines to assist with cataloguing onto ABN.

It is in a looseleaf format to enable updates and revisions to be easily incorporated, and is divided into 7 parts.

Part A lists cataloguing tools that are either required or recommended for participants cataloguing onto ABN, and also provides a list of common abbreviations used throughout the manual.

Part B contains ABN policy on AACR2R rules. It is arranged according to the chapters in AACR2R and contains ABN variations fromAACR2R and LC interpretations, as well as clarifications on certain rules and interpretations, and ABN's application of AACR2R options. ABN variations are often denoted by a Standards Committee meeting or resolution number [i.e. S.C.5 or ABN/SC/1985/RES/2].

Part C outlines ABN policy on name and subject headings. It contains guidelines to assist cataloguers with establishing name and subject headings, changing verified headings, and authority work required on headings input on high level records.

Part D contains guidelines to assist cataloguers inputting or changing records.

Part E contains the ABN standards for catalogue records. It details the fields and subfields that are required for interim, minimum and high level standards for book, serial and nonbook records.

Part F contains a bibliography and index as well as other information, such as filing rules and bumping hierarchy, that participants may find useful.

Part G contains the former Section G of the ABN subject cataloguing manual and lists approved Australian headings, instructions on how to propose Australian headings, instructions for establishing headings for commercial products and special period subdivisions applicable to Australia and its states, territories and capital cities.

As this manual only contains information relevant to descriptive cataloguing and access points, it should be used in conjunction with the other ABN manuals which cover different aspects of cataloguing.

The manuals are:

ABN data preparation manual Parts 1-2 which provides detailed guidance on the tagging and coding of records for input onto ABN.

ABN authority control manual which details the procedures for verifying name, subject and series headings in the vocabulary file of ABN.

All the ABN manuals are kept up to date by the Summary of changes to manuals, which is issued twice a year after each ABN Standards Committee meeting.

Participants are encouraged to contact the National Bibliographic Database Management Section of the ABN Office if they have any comments on the format or content of the manual, or any suggestions for material that should be included in the manual.
