Part A.1: Cataloguing tools required and recommended

Required tools

Participants inputting records onto ABN and changing existing database records are required to use the following tools. For full bibliographic details of references listed, see Part F.5.

AngloAmerican cataloguing rules. 2nd ed., 1988 revision.

Library of Congress name authorities, in the most current cumulated microfiche edition and latest supplement.

Library of Congress subject headings, in the most current cumulated microfiche edition.

AUSMARC bibliographic format.

ABN cataloguing manual. 2nd ed.

Library of Congress subject cataloguing manual : subject headings. 4th ed.

ABN data preparation manual. Parts 1-4.

ABN authority control manual.

To assist with applying and interpreting the AngloAmerican cataloguing rules, either of the following publications are required:

Library of Congress rule interpretations (latest edition)

or

Cataloging service bulletin.

Participants assigning classification numbers from Dewey Decimal classification or Library of Congress classification must use the latest editions of the appropriate schedules. Note that the latest changes to the Dewey schedules are published in Dewey decimal classification additions, notes, and decisions, otherwise known as DC&.
