Users who receive MARC records from Kinetica are required to retain the 040 field which identifies the source of the MARC record. Please remember to add your NUC symbol to the 'a' and 'd' subfields of the 040 field when cataloguing a new record or changing a record respectively.
MARC Records
Libraries Australia records are available in either MARC 8 or Unicode encoding. The Libraries Australia MARC format table maps the differences between online display and MARC output via downloading and batch products. Records may also be supplied in MARCXML format. Most files are collected from the National Library FTP server via Libraries Australia Administration although smaller files, that is, less that 1MB can be emailed to you.
Ordering Libraries Australia Products
To order a Libraries Australia product you must be a Libraries Australia member. An online order form is available from within the Libraries Australia Administration service, located under the Products tab. You will need to have Customer Administrator access enabled to access the Products order form. Email the Libraries Australia Helpdesk to request this if necessary. For Libraries Australia Document Delivery Location Data please complete the relevant order form below.
Charges for each product are added to your Libraries Australia account. Please allow five working days for the processing of your request.
Holdings
Holdings files are files of bibliographic records extracted from the Australian National Bibliographic Database (ANBD) which have had your holdings added or modified within a specified time period. These can be run as a once off product or as a regular product.
Authority Records
Marc 21 Authority records are available for Names, Titles and Subjects. A set of all Australian Authorities or particular types of authorities such as only Names can be purchased. These are automated products and will normally be available the same day unless special instructions are given. Sets of all Authorities on the ANBD can also be purchased but these will require negotiation with Libraries Australia staff.
Titles List
These are text files listing the titles for which your library has holdings. They contain the ANBD number, title, name, imprint, ISBN/ISSN and your holdings. They can be limited by bibliographic level, for example, monograph or serial and are sorted according to your specifications.
Customised Extractions
These are files of Bibliographic MARC 21 records extracted from the ANBD based on a file of ANBD numbers (previously known as Amicus numbers), ISBNs or ISSNs provided by the customer. The numbers need to be provided in a left justified text file. ISBN or ISSN extractions can include all matching bibliographic records or they can be ‘ranked’ and include only the best bibliographic record for each number.
Location Data
Libraries Australia has implemented a product to support interlibrary loan activities for Australian libraries. It is a detailed directory of Australian interlibrary loan participants sourced from the Libraries Australia Document Delivery system. This data is available to those libraries who have implemented their own interlibrary loan systems and cannot access the directory shared in Libraries Australia Document Delivery. With a growing number of vendors moving to ISO ILL compliance, a number of libraries have implemented inter-library loan systems that cannot access the directory data shared in Libraries Australia Document Delivery. This product is designed to address that gap.
The file will be supplied in Tab delimited .txt format (please contact the Libraries Australia Help Desk if an alternative format is required).
There are three options available when purchasing Location Data - as a single site user; a consortium or as a commercial supplier. Libraries Australia customers may choose to have this cost added to their existing Libraries Australia subscription or a separate invoice will be forwarded.
Processing: Requests will be processed as soon as possible after the order is received.
Notification: Customers will be notified by email with the locations data as an attachment. Where the list cannot be emailed customers will be advised how to collect it from the NLA server.
Pricing for the location data is as follows:
| Single site | $275 (inc. GST) | |
| Consortium | $495 (inc. GST) (where data is loaded on a single shared server) | |
| Commercial | $935 (inc. GST) (commercial supplier may reformat and on-sell to its customers) |
Please complete the relevant printable Location Data Order form.
Libraries Australia Z39.50 Service
What is Z39.50?
Z39.50 is an international information retrieval standard (http://www.niso.org/standards/std_info_retrieval.html) which enables one computer to speak to another in order to find and obtain information.
Using your local system you can connect to the Libraries Australia Z39.50 service to search the Australian National Bibliographic Database and other external databases.
Using Z39.50 you may save copies of records and import them directly into your system. Please note that this is ‘screen capture’ not downloading in the usual sense of the word. That is, you cannot update records or add, modify, or delete holdings before you import them into your catalogue using Z39.50. Any manipulation of the record is carried out in your local system.
Registering for the Libraries Australia Z39.50 service
Before being issued with a Z39.50 signon, you should try to connect to the Libraries Australia test database, carry out some searches and save some records. Connection details and system password are outlined in the Libraries Australia Z39.50 Configuration Guide. Once you have successfully connected, searched and saved, you should contact Libraries Australia Help Desk to obtain a Z39.50 account.
There is no charge for registering for the Libraries Australia Z39.50 service and searching of most of the Z39.50 databases offered via the gateway is free. Per search charges for the charged-for databases are listed on our Charges page.
Connecting to the Libraries Australia Z39.50 service
Information on connecting to the Libraries Australia production database is available in the Libraries Australia Z39.50 Configuration Guide. You will need to connect to our Port 1821 (USMARC) or 210 (UNICODE) depending on your system capability.
You will also need to configure your Bib-1 Search Attributes by referring to our table in the Libraries Australia Z39.50 Configuration Guide. Please note that some attributes are only valid in the ANY database, whilst others are only applicable to AU.
