Libraries Australia provides access to major Australian databases, including the Australian National Bibliographic Database. You can search for any item and locate which library in Australia holds it. Gateways to other major library databases are also provided.

Libraries Australia supports cooperation and resource sharing within the Australian library community through the delivery of MARC records and the provision of a document delivery service.

Document Delivery

Products

Libraries Australia Search offers an easy way to find and get items from the combined collections of Australia’s libraries. Users can check the availability of an item in their own or other libraries, or link through to an online bookseller.

Libraries Australia Search offers:

  • Google-like’ searching
  • Advanced and command searching
  • Search limiting by material type, eg. journals, theses, newspapers and maps.
  • Access via username and password or IP authentication.

You can now search the Australian National Bibliographic Database and many other databases including the British Library, Library of Congress, Picture Australia and full text Australian journals in APAIS/APAFT with the one search.

There are improved options for:

  • saving, emailing and printing records
  • saving and re-running searches
  • creating reports on what’s new in your areas of interest through ‘Alerts’
  • personalising your access
  • obtaining material through libraries and other suppliers.

The Libraries Australia Document Delivery service underpins resource sharing between Australian libraries. From Libraries Australia Document Delivery libraries can

  • search the Australian National Bibliographic Database to locate items,
  • create interlibrary loan requests,
  • manage the entire requesting/supply process,
  • use the Libraries Australia Document Delivery Payments Service to manage payments and credits for interlibrary loans;
  • track activity using built-in reporting facilities;
  • order online from commercial suppliers such as Infotrieve and CISTI.

Access to Libraries Australia Document Delivery is via a web client. Libraries Australia Document Delivery also interoperates with other standards-compliant interlibrary loan systems.

We provide files of bibliographic and authority MARC records extracted from the Australian National Bibliographic Database using a number of criteria. Title lists in text format are also available. Libraries order and collect products from Libraries Australia Administration using existing logins. Straightforward products are run automatically and in some cases will be available on the same day.  More complex extractions will require more time and may have to be discussed with Libraries Australia staff.

Record Import Service

Libraries that catalogue on their own local library systems then upload bibliographic files to Libraries Australia use the Record Import Service. Files can be uploaded via the Libraries Australia Administration website as well as via ftp. You can register for the Record Import Service using the Libraries Australia Administration system.

Cataloguing

Record Export Service

Libraries Australia offers a range of flexible cataloguing options for Australian libraries. Libraries Australia can be used to add information about library collections to the Australian National Bibliographic Database and to obtain records for local catalogues. Records and location information can be added online using special software (the Libraries Australia Cataloguing Client software), through a web form or by sending batches of records to Libraries Australia for addition electronically (the Record Import Service). Libraries can also use Libraries Australia to obtain bibliographic records from all Libraries Australia databases. Libraries that wish to download records from Libraries Australia use the Record Export Service (RES). Files of downloaded records can be collected via Libraries Australia Administration. Records can be downloaded by adding, editing or deleting holdings in the Cataloguing Client or Web Cataloguing form. There is an option of up to 6 downloads per day at 8.30am, 10.30am, 12.00pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.

Recent Australian Publications

Searching can also be performed using Z39.50 protocol compliant clients

This free monthly reference service listing Australia's recent publications is of interest to all engaged in research and the provision of information. You can find new publications on numerous and diverse subjects, as all subject areas are eligible for inclusion in RAP. The categories of publications listed are many and varied and include electronic resources, books, serials, music and pamphlets. Each publication has been published during the current or previous two years. Works are either published in Australia, written by Australians, or have Australian content.

Administration

The new Libraries Australia Administration system provides an online interface for customers to:

  • Check customer details, including address, contact details and names
  • Create new sub-organisations and user logins with particular permissions
  • Generate your own comprehensive reports for all cataloguing and search activity
  • Check details of previous invoices and any pending charges
  • Request products and collect product files
  • Check and manage files of records imported to the Australian National Bibliographic Database via the new Record Import Service (RIS)
