Did you know that Libraries Australia Search is able to directly search your library OPAC or online bookshop? This function is called “deep linking”.
When users search Libraries Australia and click on a list of libraries that hold that item are displayed as well as the option to view the full set of Australian booksellers from the Australian Booksellers Association’s Find a Bookshop service.
Without deep linking, when the user clicks on of a particular library or one of the bookshop hyperlinks, they are taken to the library catalogue/bookshop search screen where they have to repeat their search.
With deep linking when the user clicks on * they are taken straight to the item in your online catalogue. This functionality is replicated in Trove.
*A GREEN search catalogue button indicates that particular catalogue is deep linked.
If you are a library that would like to be set up with deep linking, please:
- Save a copy of the Deep Linking Details document to your local hard drive and complete it with details about your local system.
- Fill out the Libraries Australia and Trove Deep Linking Request form on our contact page. Make sure to upload the Deep Linking Details document when you’re finished.
For deep linking to work effectively Libraries Australia encourages all libraries to ensure their holdings are kept up to date on the Australian National Bibliographic Database (ANBD). More information about keeping your holdings up to date can be found at Global Holdings Update Service.
To implement deep linking to book sellers we would ideally like to use a “web services” API. In particular, we would like to be able to construct a URL which will search the bookshop database using either an ISBN or author/title query and have the search results returned in XML. The returned XML document would need to contain a list of matching records with each record having the title of the item and the URL to the item in separate XML fields. Using such an API, we can configure Libraries Australia so that it links directly to the page describing the item on your web site.
If you are a book seller that would like to be set up with deep linking, please:
- Save a copy of the Book Seller Deep Linking Details document to your local hard drive and complete it with details about your local system.
- Fill out the Link your Book Shop Request form on our contact page. Make sure to upload the Deep Linking Details document when you’re finished.
Please notify us any time the above information changes.
If you require further information or would like to have deep linking set up please contact us. If you already have deep linking set up and you find it is no longer working or any of the required information that you supplied to us has changed e.g. your catalogue URL, please let us know.
