Improving the information literacy of clients has always been an important role for libraries, and in recent times the use and understanding of computer technology has, of necessity, become a particular focus. In this September issue of Link-up, Ann-Maree Dyer and Cheryl Haughton describe a computer club for people with disabilities at the Rockhampton Municipal Library which has resulted in great improvements in their clients' uses of computers and library services. In other information technology developments, Linley Wallis and Barbara Fewtrell explain two new major initiatives which make access to information and braille material for people with print disabilities more accessible nationally than ever before.
Diana Giese finds that the outreach programs at Dandenong Valley Regional Libraries have had a tremendous effect in raising their profile and use among the area's culturally diverse community. Stephen Black poses some provocative challenges to the 'conventionally' perceived relationship between literacy and unemployment. Don't miss the December Link-up, in which Sue Scott will provide a response from a library perspective to the issues raised by Stephen Black. Ted Chrisfield explains the recent outfitting of the Audio Services Division of La Trobe University Libraries and Amanda Lyons provides an update on the Australian Caption Centre.
