Dockside Convention Centre, Darling Park,
Sydney
Monday 31st January, 2005
Invitation from Ebe Kartus, Chair, Australian Committee on Cataloguing
On behalf of the Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) I would like to invite you to the forthcoming ACOC seminar: What's in a Name? : the role of authorities in the 21st century.
This full-day seminar will be ACOC's main professional development event for cataloguers and metadata creators in 2005. It follows the very successful "Revolution or Evolution" seminar that attracted over 130 delegates to Melbourne in February 2004 and again has a high quality mix of Australian and overseas speakers.
The seminar will be held on the day prior to the commencement of the Information Online Conference and I hope that those of you who will be in Sydney for Online will consider coming a little early to attend the "What's in a Name?" seminar.
Program Summary
This seminar will provide an overview of a number of Australian and international projects which aim to leverage new value from authority data. It will feature a keynote address on the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) project by Dr Ed O'Neill, Consulting Research Scientist, OCLC Online Computer Library Center. Dr O'Neill will also present a session on the FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) project. Gavan McCarthy, Director, Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre, will discuss the changing role of authorities in the archives sector. Ann Huthwaite from Queensland University of Technology will discuss AACR3 and Authorities. The seminar will also include a session on the National Library of Australia's People Portal project.
