Promise for the future, or legacy of the past? : cataloguing in a changing world

Auditorium 1, Level 2, State Library of Queensland, Brisbane
Friday 7th September, 2007

Invitation from Ebe Kartus, Chair, Australian Committee on Cataloguing

On behalf of the Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) I would like to invite you to the forthcoming ACOC seminar "Promise for the future, or legacy of the past? : cataloguing in a changing world ". This full-day seminar will be ACOC's main professional development event for 2007 and will be of interest to all librarians, especially cataloguers and metadata creators. It follows several very successful seminars in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and again features a well known overseas speaker and a number of Australian speakers.

The seminar will be held on the day after the Libraries Australia Users’ Forum and I hope that those of you who will be in Brisbane for the Forum will consider staying on to attend the "Promise for the future, or legacy of the past?" seminar.

Program summary

The environment in which cataloguing operates is undergoing rapid and continuous change. Library catalogues have served their users well while libraries have been one of the main sources of information for scholars and the general public. They are now seen to be in competition with Internet search engines, such as Google, and the cataloguing process itself is under scrutiny. Many factors are causing the profession to examine traditional cataloguing practices; technological advances, the growth of digital libraries, mass digitisation projects, changes in scholarly communication, the growth in online content on the Internet, and reduced funding for libraries are all having an impact.

Where do we go from here? Will cataloguing evolve slowly to accommodate the changing environment or will there be radical change? Will the traditional standards like AACR/RDA and LCSH be replaced by other metadata standards, and if so will it really be any different? Will cataloguers need to acquire a new battery of skills to remain in the profession? This seminar will challenge both speakers and attendees to find the answers to these questions, and to guide cataloguers on paths to the future.

The seminar will feature a keynote address by Karen Calhoun, Vice President, OCLC WorldCat and Metadata Services. Other speakers will discuss various aspects of cataloguing in a changing world. View program details.
