Layers upon layers: delving into discovery
National Wine Centre, Adelaide
Friday 28th October, 2011
Invitation from Catherine Argus, Chair, Australian Committee on Cataloguing
On behalf of the Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) I am pleased to invite you to the forthcoming ACOC seminar "Layers upon layers: delving into discovery". This full-day seminar will be of interest to all librarians, especially cataloguers, metadata creators and library system administrators. The seminar will be held on the day after the Libraries Australia Users’ Forum and I hope that those of you who will be in Adelaide for the Forum will consider staying on to attend the seminar.
Program summary
The discovery layer is becoming the usual point of access to a library’s resources. In addition to internet search engines and national and international library discovery services, libraries have access to a range of products supporting institutional discover layers. This seminar will investigate the implementation of discovery layers and consider the importance of data quality in supporting successful discovery experiences.
This year’s keynote address “The Next Evolution of Library Cataloging: Finding Our Place in the 21st Century Information Ecology"will be delivered by Jenn Riley, Head of the Carolina Digital Library and Archives at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A panel session will discuss the experience and practicalities of implementing discovery products such as Primo, Summon and Encore. Kate Sergeant (University of South Australia) will talk about repository metadata and the importance of data quality in supporting discovery and data reuse.
Following its success at the 2010 seminar, there will be a session devoted to lightning talks, which this year will have a practical focus on data cleanup. The seminar will also include an update on cataloguing standards, especially the latest news on Resource Description and Access (RDA).
The day will wrap up with a look at visualisation.
