Information from library system vendors, cataloguing vendors and shared databases

We’ve pulled together statements on RDA from various library system vendors, cataloguing vendors and shared databases. To advise us of links to your system's RDA implementation news and plans, please send details to nlarda@nla.gov.au

MARC Standards Office

Changes have been made to the MARC21 encoding standard to accommodate RDA including some new fields, subfields and updated terms and codes. These changes were finalised and published in May 2010 and are summarised at http://www.loc.gov/marc/RDAinMARC29.html. For Further information about MARC21 and local system changes see the System changes FAQ .

OCLC

OCLC has been involved in RDA’s development and will participate in the US National Libraries RDA test. For further information on OCLC’s approach to RDA see RDA and OCLC. In June 2010 OCLC released a policy statement on RDA cataloguing in WorldCat during the US testing period detailing protocols for contributing RDA records and editing records on WorldCat. In July 2011, OCLC announced their intention to issue a discussion paper later in 2011, regarding the possible future of bibliographic records with mixed practices in WorldCat. The purpose will be to generate the widest possible discussion among OCLC members in order to work toward a consensus about policies that will work best for the cataloguing community and for library users. In the meantime, OCLC requests that libraries continue to abide by the policies outlined in the current policy statement. Please do not edit master records to change them from RDA to AACR2 or from AACR2 to RDA unless permitted under the policies set forth.

In November 2010, OCLC released information regarding future enhancements to the OCLC Connexions client, which include links to the RDA Toolkit.

Libraries Australia

Libraries Australia is committed to supporting the creation and exchange of RDA data from the agreed Australian implementation date. See the System changes FAQ for more information.

SCIS

SCIS has started a blog in which they will provide information about RDA for school libraries: see http://scis.edublogs.org/tag/rda/. SCIS will be closely monitoring the national implementation strategies and will develop its own implementation plan once more information is available.

SkyRiver

SkyRiver supports RDA bibliographic and authority data, and in November 2010 announced the release of new client software that includes a link to the RDA Toolkit. For more information see http://theskyriver.com/2010/11/skyriverrdasupport

eXtensible Catalog

In early March 2011, staff from the eXtensible Catalog Organization met with the US RDA Test Coordinating Committee at the Library of Congress to discuss the eXtensible Catalog’s partial implementation of RDA in a non-MARC, FRBR-based environment. As a follow-up to that meeting and presentation, the Committee invited the eXtensible Catalog Organization to submit a written statement for inclusion as an Appendix to the group's final report. That statement is now posted to the eXtensible Catalog (XC) website at http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/XCandRDA
