Teleconference 3 May 2000
An ACOC Teleconference was held on 3rd May 2000. Taking part were Peter Haddad, Ann Huthwaite, Sue Moir, Chris Taylor, and Julia Trainor. Due to a technical problem with the Conference link, Helen Hoffmann, although available, was unable to join the teleconference. Pam Dunlop was absent due to illness and Deirdre Kiorgaard attended in her place as an observer.
The teleconference took the form of a planning meeting. During the course of the meeting it became apparent that in undertaking major work for JSC, it would be important for members of ACOC to be able to have a face-to-face meeting to finalise papers. ACOC members representing ALIA would approach ALIA for possible funding to enable this to happen.
Ann Huthwaite briefed members on the recent meeting of the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, which had met in San Diego, 22-24 March 2000.
There were a number of major issues that needed to be finalised in time for the next meeting of JSC in London, 13-15 September. This meant that deadlines for completion of work would be around mid-July and ACOC responses would be sent out by mid-August. ACOC had volunteered to work on a number of important issues, and responsibilities for leading on different topics were assigned to ACOC members as follows:
1. Cartographic proposals (4JSC/ALA/31). Susanne Moir to coordinate, in consultation with the Australian Map Circle.
2. Seriality (4JSC/Chair/68/Chair follow-up/2 and previous papers in the series). Ann Huthwaite to coordinate.
3. Titles of nobility (4JSC/BL/1 etc., 4JSC/BL/3 etc., 4JSC/BL/4/ etc.). Ann Huthwaite to coordinate.
4. Harmonization of AACR2 with ISBD(ER) (4JSC/ALA/27 and subsequent papers). Helen Hoffmann to coordinate with emphasis on the following questions:
(a) Should Area 3 be eliminated?
(b) Should Area 5 for remote access electronic resources be included in the rules?
(c) Are remote access electronic resources published?
(d) How should "disk" and "disc" be defined? JSC has agreed to retain these two terms. However, ACOC needs to decide whether the existing footnote 4 to 9.5B1 is retained, or whether definitions should be included in the glossary instead (as proposed by ALA)
(e) Terminology
When referring to CD-ROMs, DVDs etc., should the term "specific format" (ALA suggested) be used or "conventional terminology" (LC suggested)?
5. Abbreviations (4JSC/LC/47). Ann Huthwaite to coordinate.
6. Publisher statement repeating data ... 4JSC/LA/1. Ann Huthwaite to coordinate.
As well as the above responses, ACOC is to prepare appropriate rule revisions to reflect the recommendations in Tom Delsey's paper on Part II of AACR2 (4JSC/Chair/65). The recommendations are nos. 2 and 5 on p.89 of the document. NLA to prepare a draft.
