Teleconferences 10 July, 21 July and 6 August 2003

Three teleconferences were held over July/August 2003 to plan for the ACOC seminars and to brief Ann Huthwaite, the ACOC representative on the Joint Steering Committee for the Revision of AACR in advance of the JSC meeting to be held in September.

Aiming for Access seminar and FRBR seminar

It was noted that there are around 185 registrations for Aiming for access. Final arrangements were discussed for the distribution of material at the seminar. It was agreed to hold a seminar on FRBR prior to VALA, and organisation of the seminar was discussed.

JSC papers

Basis of description, etc. (1.0A)

LC/59
ACOC members indicated general support for LC's proposal to move of the content of 1.0H to 1.0A and to restructure 1.0A, although they noted that this might duplicate information currently in 12.0B1. ACOC did not support the proposed new definition of "chief source of information" which based the choice of the chief source of information on the source of title proper. It was agreed that this definition was circular and confusing. ACOC also had reservations about the use of the term 'aspect'. ACOC welcomed the inclusion of assembled collections, although noting that they may not be static.

Incorporating FRBR terminology in AACR

Chair/76/Chair follow-up/4/Sec follow-up
ACOC accepted the revisions proposed in this document, as they reflect our understanding of the changes JSC has agreed to date, and noted that some of the rules in this paper are simultaneously being revised in ALA's consistency proposals.

Specific Material Designations

ALA/36/REV/ALA rep follow-up/2, CCC/6/Rev, CCC/7/Rev
ACOC questioned whether there is any value in including terms that are little used or that describe obsolete material, e.g., chip cartridges, tape cartridges, tape cassettes, and tape reels. ACOC considered that there should be a principle of using the most specific term available rather than the more generic term. ACOC noted that some of the terms in the proposed lists are not Australian current use terms. ACOC also discussed whether "sound" should be removed from terms beginning with that word. ACOC acknowledged that there are various forms of CDs and DVDs but did agree that all of these variants should be listed in 9.5B1. ACOC preferred the term electronic document (used in the example in 9.5B3) be changed to electronic text.

Consistency across Part 1: Proposed revisions for Area 2

ALA/49
ACOC supported ALA's paper. ACOC reaffirmed that all rules of general applicability should be included in chapter 1, making that chapter the logical starting point in the cataloguing process. Forward references are needed so that cataloguers are aware when they need to consult specific rules in other chapters. ACOC discussed their concerns about 2.15B, to omit the edition statement, becoming the general rule.

Multipart monographs: basis of description (21.2B2, 21.3A2, etc.)

LC/55/LC follow-up
ACOC supported LC's proposal which reaffirmed the principle of a single record for a multipart item and to base the description on the earliest part.

Transcription of series title (1.6B1 and 1.0F1)

LC/58/LC follow-up
ACOC agreed with the proposed changes to 1.6B1 to indicate that the title proper in the series area of an analytic record should be transcribed as found, but considered that referring to transcription in a specific area for a particular resource was inappropriate in 1.0F1.

Revision and simplification of 12E1

ALA/52
ACOC agreed to the proposed changes to 12.1E1 (which provides guidance on when to transcribe or supply other title information for serials and integrating resources.) so that the rule is consistent for both serials and integrating resources.

Revision of Appendix D, Glossary: Coloured illustration

ALA/51
ALA's proposed to remove the defintions of coloured illustration from both the rule and the Glossary, arguing that what is a cloured illustration was self evident. ACOC prefered that the Glossary definition be retained and revised.
