JSC PAPERS
Designations of function (2.10D)
4JSC/ALA/58/RevTwo unresolved issues were identified for discussion: firstly, the use of abbreviations; and secondly, what to do when there is more than one relationship between a person or body and a work. ACOC agreed with ALA's comments on the first issue of use of abbreviations. With regard to the second issue, ACOC agreed that the preferred treatment would be a single heading with multiple designations.
Area 5
4JSC/ALA/60ACOC members expressed concerns about overall structure, including the number of sections, and the complexity of use for the cataloguer. The need for separate chapters for media was questioned. The frequent use of "etc." in section C titles is evidence that the scope of the chapters is unclear. Specific scope problems were identified for each of the chapters. ACOC agreed that if a rule can be applied to more than one format, it should go into section "A".
Treatment of remote access electronic resources separate to the general rules was questioned. ACOC considered that the remote version of a physical item should be able to be catalogued in the same way as the physical item. It was also commented that there was too much emphasis on specific carriers, especially as carriers are likely to have short lives as a result of the increase in remote access
Ann Huthwaite expressed the concern that the proposal did not address the barrriers to removing the class of materials' concept, i.e. the chief source of information, Area 5 and GMDs/SMDs).
Concern was expressed that content has been treated as components. JSC's main objections to the "1 v. (pagination in brackets)" approach are the extra keystrokes and the fact that it overrides long standing practice. It was noted that there is still an option to revert to the long standing practice if preferred. ACOC agreed that the approach was acceptable.
It was agreed that each rule should have just a couple of examples, with more examples to be given in a supplementary list. The list could be arranged by format or type of resource to make it easier for cataloguers to use.
