JSC Responses

1. Response to 5JSC/CCC/1/LC response/LC follow-up/ALA response  Addition to “Other Agreements involving Jurisdictions”

ACOC discussed an ALA paper relating to the naming of works comprising treaties.

Members had no strong views on the issue and agreed to seek the opinion of law specialists before finalising a response.

2. Response to 5JSC/CILIP/5  Removal of “Introductory words” instruction

ACOC expressed support for the proposal to transcribe introductory words as part of the title, roll instructions for titles consisting solely or partly of the names of persons or corporate bodies into general instructions on title, and remove the serials and integrating resources exception for titles proper in both full form and as an acronym or initialism.

Discussion focussed on the issue of titles in two or more forms. It was pointed out that the proposal conflicts with current ISSN instructions on deriving titles, and that the RDA instructions on changes of title consider a change from an abbreviated form to full form to be a minor change of title.

3. Response to 5JSC/CILIP rep/1  Forms of Uniform titles

Discussion of the paper was deferred as not all members had seen it.

Revised draft of ACOC response to Chapters 6 and 7

Chapter 6 Changes

1.  Use of “families, persons, and corporate bodies”

ACOC agreed to suggest “person or group” as a second preference after “parties” to replace the phrase ‘families, persons and corporate bodies.’

2.  “Person, family, or corporate body responsible for creating a new work based on a previously existing work”.

ACOC agreed that a reference should be provided from the examples at 6.3.1.1 to Chapter 7 Related Resources, in case RDA users do not realise that an access point for the previously existing work may also be required.

3.  Concept of originating body

ACOC discussed the suggestion that originating body (6.3.2) should be covered in the instructions for creator (6.3.1). Although all members agreed that it would be preferable for this to be covered by the general instructions for creator, there was disagreement on how to achieve this.

Chapter 7 Changes

1.  Examples

ACOC discussed the use of ISBD punctuation in examples. It was agreed that explaining the use of ISBD punctuation in the Introduction to Part A was preferable to labelling individual examples.

2.  Conventions for recording relationships in 7.1.2 and 7.3

ACOC had previously agreed to suggest that the conventions for recording relationships be given once only, and the wording throughout made consistent, regardless of whether the relationship being recorded is a primary relationship or one of the types given under 7.4-7.9.

ACOC discussed alternate text to be included with the ACOC response.  Members felt that as the concepts are complex, it would be better to keep the text as simple as possible.

ACOC discussed whether 7.1.5 would still be necessary if the changes suggested for 7.1.2 and 7.3 are accepted. Alternate text for 7.1.5 will also be drafted.

3. Definition for ‘a describing work (or expression)’

ACOC members feel that the current definition is inadequate. Possible alternate definitions will be discussed by email.

2007 and 2008 ACOC Seminars

The 2007 seminar was considered to be a success. All available podcasts, papers and final presentations will be loaded to the ACOC website. They will then be publicised on the various email lists.

ACOC discussed options for the 2008 seminar. Consideration will be given to having a two day stand-alone seminar in Canberra, perhaps in November given the RDA implementation schedule. Alternatively the seminar may be held in conjunction with the Libraries Australia Forum to be held in Sydney.

RDA Implementation

RDA training will be discussed at a future teleconference.

The teleconference closed at 3.40pm.
